Eligible individuals can receive their funding from PDD South in one of two ways:
- Family-Managed Supports
- Service Funding
Here's a description of how each of these options work.
- Family-Managed Supports
Family-Managed Supports is an arrangement where funding is provided to the family - a parent, sibling, guardian or other person close to the individual with a developmental disability. They, in turn, hire staff and oversee the supports for their family member with a developmental disability. Funding may also be provided to individuals directly to manage their own supports. Family-Managed Supports can be provided in addition to agency-delivered services.
PDD program funding does not include remuneration for the family member's time spent managing the supports. Reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses may be negotiated, with the understanding that there is to be no financial gain for the family for managing the supports.
- Funding to Service Providers
In this arrangement, PDD South provides funding directly to a community service provider, through the signing of an " Agreement for Service Provider Services".
Families opting for this option have no direct involvement in paying staff, banking, accounting, or other aspects associated with being an employer. Families do, however, continue to have involvement in determining desired outcomes and in ensuring that they are receiving what best supports their son or daughter.
All PDD funded service providers are monitored to ensure they are in compliance with all template clauses contained in the "Agreement for Service Provider Services".
At PDD South, we firmly believe that the nature of the funding arrangements should be flexible and allow individuals to choose the approach that makes the most sense for their circumstances. For some people, having the opportunity to hire staff directly is important. Other people are comfortable with entrusting this responsibility to a service provider. In other cases, people can choose combinations of funding options that best support their goals and wishes.
PDD South can consult with individuals and their families or guardians about the various funding options and which type they prefer. Individuals can also learn more about each type by talking to other parents and guardians in their area.
