Eligible individuals can receive their funding from PDD South in one of two ways:

  1. Direct Funding
  2. Service Funding
Here's a description of how each of these options work.
  1. Direct Funding

    In this arrangement, PDD South provides funding directly to the individual. To receive funding directly, we ask individuals to enter into a type of contract called a Funds Administrator Agreement. Once the agreement is made, the individual can then choose to:

    • Receive a cheque directly and then hire and pay their own staff;
    • Receive a cheque directly and then pay an approved service provider for the staffing they provide.

    When individuals choose direct funding, they have choice and direct control of the type of supports purchased and who will provide those supports. They also become employers and are responsible for important things such as employment standards, payroll and federal and provincial regulations.

  2. Service Funding

    In this arrangement, PDD South provides funding directly to a community service provider, based on a Service Provider Agreement.

    Under a Service Funding arrangement, Community Service Providers may receive quarterly payments in advance or through monthly invoicing and use the funds to provide the individualized supports agreed to for each person.

    Families opting for the Service Funding option have no direct involvement in paying staff, banking, accounting, or other aspects associated with being an employer. Families do, however, continue to have involvement in determining desired outcomes and in ensuring that they are receiving what best supports their son or daughter.

    All agencies who receive PDD funding to provide supports or services must be evaluated through the ACDS Creating Excellence Together (CET) Standards at least once every three years and maintain certification.

    At PDD South, we firmly believe that the nature of the funding arrangements should be flexible and allow individuals to choose the approach that makes the most sense for their circumstances. For some people, having the opportunity to hire staff directly is important. Other people are comfortable with entrusting this responsibility to a service provider. In other cases, people can choose combinations of funding option that best support their goals and wishes.

    PDD South can consult with individuals and their families or guardians about the various funding options and which type they prefer. Individuals can also learn more about each type by talking to other parents and guardians in their area.
