One of the most important roles that we assume at PDD South is to assure that funding is being used for the intended purpose of improving the lives of adults with developmental disabilities. However, we know that we cannot truthfully monitor each individual's circumstances. This is partly due to the sheer number of people but mostly out of respect for the uniqueness of each individual. The individual, his/her family and whoever else the individual chooses are the best monitors.
PDD South's role is then to ensure that there are safeguards in place within agencies and even the community, which reflect and respect individuals' and families' wishes and goals.
How do we do this?
Our Quality Assurance Consultants follow a highly interactive process of systematic monitoring that includes the following:
- conversations with a sample of individuals receiving PDD funded supports
- conversations with families/guardians
- conversations with Executive Directors/Senior Staff of the service agency
- conversations with Staff of the service agency
- file reviews
- informal observations of relationships, interactions and outcomes
Based on several months of this type of monitoring, an annual report is compiled which outlines areas of success and celebration as well as areas which require additional focus. This report is presented for review to the Executive Director of the service agency and to the CEO of PDD South.
This monitoring is both extensive and non-intrusive and serves to assure the delivery of PDD South funded supports are reflective of our vision and mission.
This monitoring approach is designed to work in partnership with the Creating Excellence Together Standards set out by the Alberta Council of Disability Services (ACDS). It also provides valuable feedback to the global agency and staff body.
