Caring Now and For the Future
Alberta's Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) Program

The PDD program provides supports and services for adults with developmental disabilities that help them be included in community life and be as independent as possible.

In 2008, the Minister of Seniors and Community Supports, the Honorable Mary Anne Jablonski, asked the PDD Community Boards to meet with stakeholders to identify ways to improve the PDD program. The Community Boards met with over 200 adults with developmental disabilities, their families/guardians, service provider agencies and provincial organizations.  As well, the Minister met with many individuals, families and service agencies and visited other jurisdictions to learn more about best practices in delivering supports for adults with developmental disabilities.

The Minister has identified six priority actions to improve the PDD program and asked the PDD Community Boards to move forward in implementing them. The goals of the priority actions are to improve clarity about the PDD program's mandate, increase consistency in program delivery, and improve effectiveness and efficiency to ensure the long-term sustainability of the program. What We Do

We do want to help individuals with developmental disabilities learn to have fulfilling lives, just like any other person. We do this by making sure they have information on what supports and services are available in the community and to help in getting the supports and services they need. This might include staffing for the individual to live in his/her own home, have meaningful activities during the day, employment and/or assistance in many other areas.

We help individuals and their families/guardians:

  1. Make sure they have access to the right kind of support and services
  2. Make sure those services are delivered appropriately and are within the purpose of PDD
  3. Make sure that funding is in place and used for the right things
  4. Help open doors to developing meaningful connections in the community
We don't make decisions for people; we just ensure that they can have information on options available to them so that they are making informed choices about their lives and the kind of support they require. We believe that individuals, with the assistance of their families and friends, are the most important source for identifying what is best for themselves.

When everything is established and underway, our staff continues to evaluate and assess whether PDD funding is achieving what it was intended to achieve.
